God’s Work In Christ: The Church

What was God’s great purpose from the beginning? God’s plan was not simply to prepare a place called heaven, but to create a people—a spiritual family united in Christ.

The church is far more than a building, an institution or a weekly gathering. It is the family of God, the Bride of Christ and the body through which Jesus continues His work on earth. The church is God’s masterpiece—His great work through which His wisdom, love and glory are made visible to the world.

Christ’s death and resurrection made this family possible. Jesus gave Himself to bring people from every background into a living relationship with God and with one another. Through Him, we are no longer strangers or outsiders. We belong to God, and we belong together.

Ephesians also reveals the extraordinary authority of Christ. Jesus was raised from the dead and seated above every rule, authority, power and dominion. He has been given a name above every other name. That includes not only the names we admire, but also the names we fear—sickness, poverty, depression, anxiety, addiction and despair. None of these stands above Jesus.

Because believers are united with Christ, His victory shapes the church’s identity and mission. The church is His body. We are His hands and feet, called to carry His love, truth, healing and hope into the world. We do not gather merely for our own encouragement; we are strengthened so that we can continue the ministry of Jesus wherever He has placed us.

Yet this calling cannot be fulfilled through human effort alone. Paul’s prayer in Ephesians 3 points us to the source of genuine spiritual strength. He prays that believers would be strengthened in their inner being through the Holy Spirit and that Christ would dwell in their hearts through faith. Our effectiveness begins not with activity, but with being deeply rooted in the love and presence of God.

God’s vision for His church is greater than anything we could produce ourselves. He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask, imagine or think—not according to our ability, but according to His power already at work within us.

The church is God’s family, Christ’s body and His masterpiece. When we understand who we are, we can live with faith, courage and purpose, displaying His glory in every part of life.
