Gideon’s Faith
Judges 6:14-16 “The Lord looked at him and said, “Go in this your strength and deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. Have I not sent you?” He said to Him, “O Lord, how shall I deliver Israel? Behold, my family is the least in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my father’s house.” But the Lord said to him, “Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.”
Gideon’s life is a wonderful example to us of how to grow strong in faith. In the account mentioned above, Gideon was in a time of despair and hopelessness. He was living under the oppression of the Midianites, and having been under that kind of environment for so long, it began to shape the way he saw himself, his nation and the nature of God.
However, when the Angel of the Lord appears to him, calls him a “mighty warrior,” and chooses him to deliver the nation, we see how Gideon’s faith grew.
His faith grew because he began to understand the true nature of His God. He wasn’t just some distant God who no longer cared about Israel; He was the “Very present help in time of need.” (Psalm 46:1) He was a God who saw what was happening to His people, and He cared.
Gideon’s personal revelation of the true nature of God was the first step to him growing strong in faith.
Great faith comes from a deep understanding of how we relate to the One who said it.
Of course we know that faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. (Romans 10:17) But it’s important that the foundation of our faith comes from a genuine personal fellowship with the One who made the promise.
If you want to know more about God and His nature, not only does His Word reveal who He is, but look at creation. Look at how magnificent it is. Look at the consistency and the wonders of what He created. We can learn a lot about God through what He has made and the detail He put into His creation. Would we really think that He has taken any less care into our lives? The detail and planning of your life has been so meticulously thought through and planned. You can trust Him with your life.
When we understand God’s love for us, His heart towards us, and how He sees us, our faith becomes firmly rooted and established, and we are unshakable regardless of the situation. We know He cares and He is faithful.
Faith is not about having faith in faith principles; it is about having faith in the One Who made the promises. We never want to become so caught up in doing the “works of faith” and forget the One Who is the Author and Finisher of our faith. (Hebrews 12:2)
I encourage you this week to ask the Lord to reveal to you how He sees you. Let Him show you how good He wants to be in your life. Take time to hear from Him and what He has said to you about your situation. It’s from this place of fellowship that our faith is firmly rooted and established in His love.
What a God He is! And He’s YOUR God!
